Our Mission

Our concerns are particular to the Kalenjin, but they are not private to us. Highland stewardship, generational livelihoods, education that keeps its promises, and civic institutions that remain honest are the tasks of every serious society in this century. We hold them here, at the source of the Nile watershed, with the discipline our elders demand and the transparency our partners deserve.

We measure success in whether a household is stronger this year than last, and stronger again next year, and whether the strength of that household reaches the neighbour's household and not only its own children. Cooperatives, savings groups, and community enterprise are our instruments.

We do not measure success in the fortunes of a few of our own who have done well. We rejoice with them. We ask them to give back. But their story is not our metric. The metric is the median household.

The Kalenjin languages are cousins in a single family. We teach them in classrooms, we speak them on the radio, we write them into books, and we archive the elders while they are still with us.

A tongue is a memory in motion. When we lose one, we lose a room in the house. We are building the room back.

Every forest we defend, every river we clean, every ridge we replant, every hectare we help title correctly, is a page of the covenant. We measure this in trees standing, in springs flowing, in title deeds honoured, and in disputes settled between neighbours who had stopped speaking.

When the Foundation speaks in the name of the Kalenjin, we speak with the authorisation of the elders and the executive together, and never without both. When we are silent, we are silent for a reason, and we will say why in time.
